The Coach House
|
The History
The house was originally built in the mid-eighteenth century. The
original smallholders in the area had a very hard life, eking out
a living growing their own vegetables and keeping a few pigs for
the wool and maybe a cow for fresh eggs! The house was in fact the
dining room with a small room above which youcould hardly stand
up in and was probably used for storage.
At the end of the nineteenth century, Highfield House
was enlarged to include what is now the kitchen and guests bedroom.
It was still a humble little house, until Robert acquired it in
the mid eighties and began a programme of refurbishment and upgrading.
He landscaped the grounds, planting most if not all the shrubs and
flowers, putting in a new water supply (all the water in the house
is supplied by a spring in the woods), laying out the kitchen garden,
and enlarging the house. This work was done from stone he quarried
from the grounds. There are plans to enlarge still further in the
future - watch this space for developments!
The House
On your arrival, you are given time to relax after your journey
with a complimentary glass of Sherry. You can then sit back and
admire your room, each decorated in a highly individual style.
All guests rooms are light and airy with television, hair-dryer,
tea and coffee making facilities, chilled spring water, fresh
flowers and furnished in the comfortable elegance you would expect
of a Welsh Country home with a hint of the Mediterranean. There
is a spacious dining room, where guests dine around an old oak
table made from reclaimed floor boards decorated with fine china
and delicious foods. Our candlelit dinners are an experience not
to be missed.
There is also a large terrace and lawn on which to relax and
maybe enjoy a bottle of chilled wine.
